Who is a “Caregiver”

For the purpose of this resource, we define caregiver as:

An individual in a position to provide direct support, guidance, and advocacy for individuals at risk of or experiencing human trafficking or sexual exploitation. A caregiver in this context goes beyond meeting basic needs; they offer trauma-informed, survivor-centred care that fosters safety, empowerment, self-determination, and healing.

Caregivers may include personal connections like parents, guardians, family members, or friends, or professional connections like social workers, educators, healthcare providers, law enforcement, shelter staff, and other frontline professionals who play a role in protecting and supporting survivors on their journey toward stability and recovery.
